MISSION STATEMENT
To offer mentoring for youth with particular emphasis on addiction with the aim to promote and foster positive and lasting impressions of hope and empowerment for all involved.
The Ann Bass Academy is a multi-faceted grassroots community service organization providing training, groups, and volunteer opportunities for the professional and the community at-large.
Mentees are 16-21 year old males and females who are currently or have previously been involved with the Criminal Justice System, and/or those who have a family or personal history of substance abuse, and reside within the South Dayton area.
Referrals of the mentees are provided through outreach with the criminal justice system including youth and adult probation, police departments, and judges as well as the educational system including high schools, training and vocational schools. Outreach for the mentors encompasses the surrounding community including churches, community centers, groups and businesses.
ABA provides opportunities for inspired growth and understanding in fundamental and pragmatic life skills development through the utilization of the Creative Arts and other experiential opportunities. Opportunities are provided for 1:1 time between mentor and mentee on a weekly basis, as well as in settings conducive to the development of a relationship built on mutual interests. Additional Support Groups offered at the ABA will include the Winners’ Circle of Ohio, the Circle of Courage, drumming circles, Successful Self Direction, and Finding and R -Claiming YourSelf, as well as several other diverse groups with a focus on the creative arts.
Presentations and outreach for both potential mentors and mentees will begin by September 1, 2006, with the first 5 matches in place by October 1, 2006. We anticipate the recruitment and placement of 20 additional complementary mentor/mentee units over the course of the next 4-6 months, for a total of 25, concluding June 30, 2007.
Background checks and initial screenings will be conducted through the Mentoring Collaborative. Basic “Mentoring 101”will be offered every 2-3 months at the ABA. Additional trainings and support will be offered on an ongoing monthly basis for personal awareness as well as strengthening the mentor/mentee relationship.
